I came across the bowl and elbow ( I have no idea what the correct name for it is) of an antigue Briar Smoking Pipe in a antique shop in Cardiff. I have seen pictures of soldiers going off to the First World War with these pipes on long stems - so the Lord alone know how old it is.
It was in two parts and with no stem. The guy on the stall knew it was a pipe but had no idea what the other bit was for. I made him a derisory offer and he accepted readily. The stem is off of a cheap pipe I had laying around, I extended it using some old radiator fittings I had in the bits box. The other fittings, including the values were bits I had laying around. The front legs were out of my clock parts box. Proudly I took it to the second Lincoln Asylum and promptly dropped it!! My Lady Nikki suggested some kind of holster to carry it in. The holster was made out of some leather I had left over from revamping a dinning chair and fitted with various clock and watch parts. A miniature horse bridal and some chain I found at a car booty allowed me to attach a scrapper made from a clock part and a brass dibber that was given to me by a friend. After a long search I found a seller on ebay that sold long pipe stems at a price I could afford. I changed the stem to the long one because it's more in keeping with the original configuration. It's also great for gesturing and pointing. The first question I get asked always is "Does it work?" And the answer is yes, wonderfully. (Price £300) |
